ACADEMY CEO INTRODUCTION:
This is a truly exciting opportunity for a new generation of freelancers to step onboard in a truly unique way. We are looking for digital nomads, intrepid travellers and passionate storytellers who can inspire guests about the amazing destinations they will be visiting. Be ready to present your passion for communicating from the outset!

Trust us with your journey

Step 1 - The Job Role
The Opportunity: Your Office, The Ocean. Your Backyard, The World.
Are you a professional wanderer, a subject-matter expert, or a cultural storyteller tired of the traditional "desk-bound" life? We are looking for a new generation of Destination Speakers to join our elite freelance roster.
This isn't a traditional 9-to-5; it’s the ultimate lifestyle hack. We offer a high-status partnership that allows you to monetize your expertise in history, photography, or journalism while exploring the world’s most remote ports.
As a "semi-digital nomad", you will enjoy the freedom of the shore by day and the prestige of the main stage by night—with all living expenses covered.
The Destination Speaker is a key ambassador for the cruise line, responsible for significantly enhancing the guest experience by providing engaging, educational, and inspiring presentations on the destinations visited by the ship.
The goal is to generate genuine enthusiasm and provide practical, insightful information that maximizes the guests' overall enjoyment of their journey.
The Role: What You’ll Do
As a freelance Destination Speaker, you are the architect of the guest's journey. You don’t just deliver lectures; you curate "edutainment" experiences that bridge the gap between the ship and the shore.
Own the Stage: Deliver captivating, 45-minute "visual journeys" in world-class theaters. Deliver each presentation with integrity, enthusiasm, and a personalized approach to connect with a diverse audience and actively encourage guest participation. Professionally manage a question-and-answer segment following each talk to address guest queries and further enrich the discussion.
Hyper-Local Storytelling: Use your "Digital Nomad Toolkit" to capture real-time content in port and embed it into your presentations that same afternoon.
Be the Expert: Serve as a high-level consultant for guests, offering "insider secrets" and cultural context that they won't find in a guidebook by researching and developing a program. Present on a diverse range of subjects, including:
Culture & History: Regional history, traditions, and contemporary culture.
Arts & Architecture: Significant local art movements, landmarks, and architectural styles.
Cuisine & Lifestyle: Local culinary specialties, markets, and regional customs.
Local Insight: Highlight iconic landmarks, as well as providing insider tips on local "hidden gems" and off-the-beaten-path experiences.
Market Your Mind: Craft "click-worthy" session titles and descriptions that compete for guest attention and drive theater attendance.
Content Development and Delivery: Research, develop, and deliver a program of high-quality, unique, and insightful talks focused on the countries and ports of call.
Professional Conduct: Maintain a high standard of professionalism and adherence to the cruise line's policies and procedures throughout the contract
Key Hard Skills: Your Digital Nomad Toolkit
We are looking for self-sufficient "one-person production houses" who bring their own technical edge:
Mobile Content Creation: Proficiency in on-the-go editing (Canva, CapCut, Adobe Express) to keep content fresh and relevant.
AV Self-Sufficiency: The ability to manage your own digital ecosystem (iPad presentations, Bluetooth clickers, 4K visual storytelling) without relying on a tech crew.
Agile Researching: Expert use of AI tools and digital archives to build professional lectures on new destinations in under three hours if itineraries change.
Copywriting & Marketing: The ability to sell your ideas through compelling personal brand marketing.
Deep expertise in various regional topics
A passion for travel
Exceptional public speaking skills
The Freelancer’s Scorecard: How We Measure Success
In the freelance world, your reputation is your currency. We measure success through:
The "Re-Book" Rate: High guest satisfaction scores that make you a "must-have" for future voyages.
Intellectual ROI: Evidence that your advice empowered guests to explore destinations more deeply and independently.
Low-Friction Integration: The ability to step onto any ship in the fleet and deliver a flawless performance with zero "hand-holding."
Social Amplification: Building a bridge between the ship experience and the digital world through your personal brand.
Requirements & Preparation
The "Knowledge Vault": You must arrive with a cloud-based library (Notion/Evernote) of maps, timelines, and secrets for your assigned region.
The Technical Survival Kit: You must own your gear (HDMI adapters, portable SSDs, high-end travel microphones).
Brand-Ready Wardrobe: A capsule wardrobe that moves seamlessly from "Shore Explorer" to "Main Stage Professional."
STCW & Medical: Ability to pass standard maritime safety and health certifications as required.
You will work onboard cruise ships across 1-2 longer voyages providing a top quality part of the guest experience.

Step 2 - Requirements
Before you start an amazing adventure on the oceans and growing your career, it is important to know that stepping onboard a cruise ship as a Destination Speaker for the first time is a little bit complicated. As such, you need to be fully prepared for the steps you will need to take before you can start working.
Firstly, destination speaker assignments are planned far in advance - up to 18 months. This means that it can take around a year to go from being assigned a cruise to actually getting onboard to deliver it. Are you prepared to wait this long?
Whilst this role is not governed by the same pre-embarkation rigor that shipboard roles are, you will still need to ensure that you have completed all necessary paperwork, all travel documentation is up to date and that you have passed the necessary medical or vaccination requirements (if required).
Before you step onto the gangway and into your first cruise ship you will need to go through 6 main stages to get there, which we will guide you through as part of your application process with us.
Application & Personal Video (this part)
Interview and Assessment (with us first, then with client afterwards)
Medical Requirements (if required)
Visa or Passport Applications (dependant on country of travel)
Pre-employment HR certification including any requests from the cruise lines including:
Police clearance certificate
HR paperwork
Travel arrangements (in coordination with the cruise line partner)
We have a comprehensive guide to answer all the key questions which we think you need to know about the requirements to getting onboard for the first time:
The Academy team is here to support you at every step of your journey onboard. We know the industry, we know the people and we know the expectations.

CV: Ensure that your CV is up to date and saved in PDF format to be uploaded
Video: Record a 1-2 minute portrait-format personal profile video introduction to help us get to know you as a person, your personality, energy and passion beyond your CV.
Here are a few tips to help you create a great video:
Keep it brief. Your video should be around 1 minute and no longer than 2 minutes in length.
Be yourself. This is your chance to let your personality shine! We want to see your genuine energy and a positive attitude.
Showcase your experience. Tell us about yourself and your previous roles. Highlight experiences that align with the position you're applying for, specifically focusing on skills like travel, presentation, and building strong relationships.
Bring the energy. Speak confidently and with enthusiasm. We'll be looking for your ability to connect with people, much like you would during a destination talk or a conversation with a guest during a Q&A..
When you have finished recording and are happy with your work, make sure that your video is in a standard format (usual video file for a mobile phone) and upload it to YouTube Shorts or Loom (you can set the video to 'unlisted' if you want it to remain private). Once you have uploaded it, copy the link to the video as you will need to paste this onto the application form, once you have uploaded your CV.
Application Form: Complete the rest of our application form with requested additional details / understanding not shown on your CV.
Once you have done your research, listened to our podcast and feel ready to move forward, all you need to do is click on the 'Apply For Job' button below on the right.
